According to meteorologists of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), the weather in Austria will be very changeable in the coming week and only from Sunday afternoon until Monday the sun will shine. Temperatures will remain in the minus range, especially in the morning.
Today, Friday will bring sunny weather in the south. North of the main ridge of the Alps as well as in the north and east, however, lively to strong westerly winds will ensure an interplay of dense clouds and sunny spells. While it will rain or snow in the north of the Alps with a snow line between 500 and 800 meters above sea level, everywhere else rain or sleet showers are to be expected. However, most of the showers will fall during the first half of the day. Early temperatures will range from minus six to plus five degrees, afternoon temperatures from two to eight degrees.
Hardly any sun on Saturday
Besides dense clouds of a warm front, the sun will hardly show itself on Saturday. While in the west there may be light local rain in the morning, further north and east rain will start in the afternoon, in Upper Austria initially also sleet, which will intensify significantly until the evening. The snow line will rise to between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Only in the south it will remain largely dry. Here, the chances of a few rays of sunshine are also highest.
The wind will increase during the day and blow moderately to briskly, towards evening partly also strongly from westerly directions. Depending on the wind, early temperatures will range between minus seven and plus three degrees, daily highs between two and eight degrees.
On Sunday sunshine, but also stormy
In the northern half, Sunday will start with many dense clouds, which will also bring some rain or sleet showers. The snow line will initially remain mostly above or around 1,000 meters, but may drop somewhat in Upper and Lower Austria and in Upper Styria in the morning, before the showers subside away from the northern jam. In the afternoon, the sun will assert itself more and more often. South of the main ridge of the Alps, shower clouds will hardly arrive due to foehn effects, the clouds will break up earlier and it will be bright and sunny. Early temperatures will rise to between minus four and plus nine, depending on the wind, and daytime highs to around four to twelve degrees.
Changeable and stormy weather in the coming week
On Monday, the sun will initially shine more often away from local fog patches, especially in the eastern half, but gradually clouds will increase from the west and there will be renewed precipitation. The snow line could drop to about 700 to 500 meters, on the northern side of the Alps winter thunderstorms with sleet are also possible. The wind will initially blow weakly to moderately from different directions, with frontal passage partly freshening from the west. Early temperatures will drop to about minus six to plus two degrees, daytime highs to about three to eight degrees.
In the northwest and on the northern side of the Alps, dense clouds will prevail on Tuesday, and it may also snow frequently, at least in the first half of the day. Early temperatures will reach minus five to plus three, daytime highs barely above one to seven degrees.
